Tyler Pennebaker

Background

I was born in the Bay Area but spent the majority of my childhood overseas in Europe and Asia before returning to Cupertino for high school. During my time as an undergrad, I studied physics in UCSB's College of Creative Studies and researched methane pyrolysis for clean energy applications under the Chemical Engineering department. After graduating, I worked on experiment controls and data systems for LCLS endstations at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. I couldn't stay away from the wonderful atmosphere of Santa Barbara for very long though, and have returned to pursue my Ph.D. in Materials. Outside of the lab, I enjoy getting outdoors, playing board and video games, and hanging out with my friends.

Current Research

My project uses NMR spectroscopy and other techniques to study the dynamics of solid-state batteries in an effort to make safer and better batteries for a variety of applications. I am currently examining the chemical compatibility of solid electrolytes for use in dual-electrolyte all-solid-state batteries.
